JTC Summer Theatre Festival July 22-August 28
Since this is my personal site, let me just say: the idea of this series is so exciting and creatively fulfilling. As many of you know, there’s a part of my career dedicated to shows from the Golden Age of American Theatre.
But there are always, always wonderful new shows being written and produced. And the Sandhills area needs—deserves—to see them, in professional productions. So the JTC Summer Theatre Festival was born. All these shows are contemporary; they’re also ideal summer content: entertaining and engaging, but also with a meaningful takeaway with wide appeal.
It has taken a while to go from idea to execution, from dream to reality on this…but we’re here now, and I couldn’t be prouder.

Agatha Christie #3 at JTC - The Mousetrap in November - 70th Anniversary Production!
We’re doing our third Agatha Christie play at Judson Theatre Company November 17-20, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap. It’s still running in London’s West End, and 2022 is the 70th Anniversary! We’re proud to be part of the worldwide celebration of that milestone.
Agatha Christie is best known as the world’s bestselling author…but did you know she’s also the world’s most successful female playwright too? Judson Theatre Company had our first Christie success with And Then There Were None (2017). Then we did one of the biggest shows we’ve ever done, Witness for the Prosecution in 2019, the first theatrical production in the new Bradshaw Performing Arts Center.

Summer Dreams Come True: Judson Theatre Company Summer Theatre Festival
Ever since we started the company in 2012, Judson Theatre Company’s Artistic Director Daniel Haley and I have had conversations where we asked, “What can we do to expand our programming?” And though we never worked together in summer stock, each of us had spent several years working in various East Coast summer theatres.
Summer programming seemed the most logical expansion of Judson Theatre Company’s programming. But several things had to happen first:
—we needed the facility: and in 2019 with the completion of Bradshaw Performing Arts Center at Sandhills Community College, suddenly it was real…the beautiful McPherson Theater at BPAC.
—we knew the programming had to be different: what fit the space? what could we do that was different from the classic plays we’ve done on our mainstage? what might the audience we already have be interested in seeing that they don’t get to see every day?
—we needed major support: like any new venture, figuring out the finances was the first hurdle. We’ve learned to get a workable set of numbers first, before we do any creative planning. Thanks to Tom & Kathy McPherson, we were able to go forward with confidence.
It took dreaming, thinking, planning, fundraising. Thinking about what’s possible, as well as what’s realistic.
AND SO THE DREAM IS COMING TRUE!
Summer 2022 will bring JTC’s first annual Summer Theatre Festival! Three exciting 21st century shows receive their Sandhills area premieres in the beautiful McPherson Theater. If you haven’t been in the space yet, just wait—you’ll love it.
